Exploring Mallorca by Luxury Car: Routes and Experiences
There are places in the world where driving is not merely transportation but an experience in itself—where the road becomes the destination. Mallorca is emphatically one of those places. The island's compact geography concentrates an astonishing variety of landscapes into an area you can cross in under an hour, yet the roads that connect them are so beautiful, so varied, and so rewarding that the journey invariably becomes the highlight.
With a premium vehicle from Azul Cars, every drive becomes an occasion. Whether you are navigating the legendary hairpin bends of the Tramuntana in a responsive sports car, cruising the coastal roads of the southwest in a luxury convertible, or exploring the island's hidden interior in a refined SUV, the combination of exceptional roads and exceptional machinery creates moments of pure driving pleasure.
The Essential Routes
Route 1: The Ma-10 — Andratx to Pollença
This is, quite simply, one of the finest driving roads in Europe. The Ma-10 traces the spine of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, for approximately 90 kilometres from Andratx in the southwest to Pollença in the north. The road climbs through pine forests, skirts dramatic cliff edges with views that stretch to the horizon, passes through stone-built villages that seem unchanged for centuries, and descends through terraced olive groves to the sea.
Key stops: Estellencs (coffee on the terrace at Es Grau), Valldemossa (the Chopin monastery and village bakeries), Deià (lunch at El Olivo or Ca's Patró March on the cala), the Sa Calobra descent (a masterpiece of road engineering with 12 kilometres of switchbacks), and Lluc monastery.
Best vehicle: A responsive grand tourer or sports car. The road rewards precise handling and responsive steering.
Duration: Allow a full day. This is not a road to rush.
Route 2: The Southwest Coast — Palma to Port d'Andratx
A shorter but equally rewarding drive, this route follows the coast from Palma through Bendinat, Portals Nous, and Camp de Mar to Port d'Andratx. The road offers glimpses of the sea between pine trees, passes the entrance to Port Adriano (worth a stop for coffee at the Philippe Starck-designed marina), and arrives at one of the island's most exclusive harbour villages.
Key stops: Puerto Portals (the see-and-be-seen marina), Port Adriano (architecture and superyachts), Camp de Mar (the beach restaurant on the island), Port d'Andratx (harbour-front dinner).
Best vehicle: A luxury convertible. The gentle pace and warm air make open-top driving irresistible.
Route 3: Wine Country — Santa Maria to Binissalem
Mallorca's wine region lies in the gentle hills of the central plain, and a morning drive through the vineyards is one of the island's quieter pleasures. The route from Santa Maria del Camí through Consell to Binissalem passes stone-walled estates, century-old bodegas, and landscapes that recall Tuscany at its most pastoral.
Key stops: Macià Batle (tastings and contemporary art), José L. Ferrer (historic bodega), Bodegas Ribas (Mallorca's oldest winery, dating to 1711).
Best vehicle: A refined SUV or saloon. The roads are gentle, and you will want boot space for wine purchases.
Route 4: The Northeast — Artà to Cap de Formentor
The northeast offers a different Mallorca—wider, wilder, and less developed. The drive from Artà through Alcúdia to the dramatic Cap de Formentor lighthouse is a journey through contrasting landscapes: the medieval hilltop town, the Roman ruins of Pollentia, the wide bay of Alcúdia, and finally the narrow, vertiginous road to the island's northernmost point.
Key stops: Artà (hilltop sanctuary and Saturday market), Alcúdia Old Town (walled medieval centre), Formentor beach (the island's most famous strand), Cap de Formentor lighthouse (sunset views).
Best vehicle: A comfortable GT. The Formentor road demands confidence but rewards with extraordinary views.
Practical Considerations
The Azul Cars Fleet

Driving in Mallorca
Mallorca drives on the right. Speed limits are well-signed and generally 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main roads, and 50 km/h in towns. Parking in Palma and popular villages can be challenging in summer—the Azul Cars team can advise on the best options for each destination.
Combining Experiences
Many of our clients use their Azul Cars vehicle as the thread connecting a series of island experiences—a morning property viewing with Balearic Blue, an afternoon at a vineyard, and an evening at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The freedom of a private vehicle, combined with local knowledge from the Isle of Mallorca Group, transforms a holiday into a genuine exploration.
Your Island, Your Pace
Mallorca reveals itself differently depending on how you move through it. From the water with Bluebnc Yachting, you see the coastline. On foot in the Tramuntana, you feel the mountains. But from behind the wheel of a fine car, on roads that seem designed for the pleasure of driving, you experience the island's extraordinary variety in a single, unforgettable day.
